New study backs angioplasty through the wrist (AP)

AP - The best path to a clogged heart may be through the wrist. About a million artery-clearing angioplasties are performed in the United States each year, and the usual route is to thread a tube to the heart through an artery in the groin.

Did you know that not all fats are unhealthy or fattening? While it is true that a taking a high fat diet may cause you to gain weight and increase you risk of getting cardiovascular disease, taking the right kind of fats can actually be good dmae bitartrate your heart and cardiovascular system, and help you to manage your weight better.

As a matter of fact, taking these good fats also can relieve you of joint pains, reduce your cholesterol level, strengthen your body defenses, improve your concentration, sharpen your memory and help look better by alleviating dry, coarse skin and cracked heel, strengthening cracked or week nails, and adding luster to dry, frizzy hair and splits ends.

These good fats are the essential fatty acids (EFAs) that are Omega 3 (EPA and DHA from fish oil) and Omega 6 (GLA from evening promise oil) which must be obtained from the diet or supplementation because our bodies cannot make them.

EFAs are vital for the permeability, flexibility and integrity of cell membranes, which allow the efficient passage of oxygen and other nutrients into the cell for nutritional support, and waste materials out of the cell for proper elimination.

Red blood cells also require EFAs. When EFAs are insufficient, red blood cell membranes lose their flexibility, become rigid and less effective in transporting oxygen throughout the body, resulting in reduced oxygen supply to body tissue, the root cause of many health problems.

EFAs also protect against invading viruses and bacteria by strengthening the cellular membranes. They are the precursors for the production of series 1 and 3 prostaglandins, hormone like substance with a wide range of important actions. These good prostaglandins counter the actions of bad prostaglandins in the body by inhibiting inflammation, regulating immune functions, controlling blood sugar level and balancing blood pressure and hormone levels. For optimum health, we need both Omega 3 and Omega 6 in our diet as our bodies are unable to convert one series to the other. They play different but important roles in the body - Omega 3 being the precursor for series 1 prostaglandins, while Omega 6 is the precursor for series 3 prostaglandins.

The importance of Omega 3 (EPA & DHA) were first discovered when scientist observed the Eskimos of northern Canada and Greenland consume a traditional diet of fish and seal blubber, yet hardly suffer from coronary heart disease despite their high fat diet. Today, there over 5,000 scientific papers have co enzyme q10 publishing on the benefit of omega 3 in reputable international medical journals. Omega 3 can be obtained mainly from important cold water deep-sea fishes like salmon, sprat, herring and tuna. However, the rising levels of heavy metals, mercury, dioxins, PCB and other contaminations in such fishes are worrying as these contaminations are toxins to the body and may have affect the nervous system. Supplementing with a safe and reliable source of deep sea Omega 3 that has been purified using molecular distillation eliminates that risk of poisoning, while dmae bitartrate sufficient supplies of Omega 3.

Omega 3 remarkable reduces serum LDL "bad" cholesterol and triglycerides, while rising HDL "good" cholesterol. It also reduces the build up of cholesterol laden plaque in arteries and promotes smoother, healthier and more elastic blood vessels. Clinical studies have proven that Omega 3 helps to lessen the risk of blood clots forming within a blood vessel or artery, which can result in a fatal heart attack or stroke. Studies shown that survival of first heart attack can avoid having a second one and improve their chance of long term survival by supplementing with fish oils. Omega 3 also reduces the risk of sudden cardiac arrest by lowering the pulse rate.

DHA is the building block of human brain tissue. It is crucial for the fluidity of the cell membranes and improving their "gate-keeping" abilities which allow the efficient flow of information in and out of the brain cells. Studies have shown that the brain activity actually increases within 2 hours upon consuming a DHA supplement. Hence DHA is essential for students and adults who use a lot of their brain. DHA also been shown to slow down mental decline in adults. Scientist has shown that pregnant woman who take DHA supplements during pregnancy give birth to smarter babies. Not only does DHA boost learning abilities, memory and concentration, it also greatly enhances the mood, promotes calmness and improves one's response to cope with stress. Low DHA intake has also been linked to attention deficit hyperactive disorder (ADHD) and low IQ's, while deficiency causes brain degeneration, and also is a major factor in Alzheimer's disease. (Characterized by severe premature memory loss).

The benefits of Omega 6 are mostly attributed to Gamma Linolenic Acid (GLA). But GLA is not typically found in the foods we eat, with the exception of very small quantities in organ meat and egg yolks and is converted in the body from Linoleic Acid (LA) we obtained from our diet. Unfortunately, this conversion process of LA to GLA in the body is very limited and is often blocked by stress, smoking, ageing, nutritional deficiencies, diabetes, cholesterol and the consumption of meats, refined carbohydrates, sugar, hydrogenated oil and alcohol. Commercial processing methods also modify vegetables oils into forms that cannot be converted into GLA by our bodies. Hence it is not surprising that many of us are deficient in GLA and nutritionists often recommend supplementing with high grade evening primrose oil containing 10% GLA.
